Stress is good, stress is natural, stress is movement, and movement is needed for any kind of development. But for every exertion there needs to follow a period of rest. The problem of stress arises when the exertion is not followed by rest. At this point the system becomes – with time – overloaded.
Today we are stressed about very many things, most of them actually not connected with immediate survival. It is more about constant mental and emotional pressure. Some, if not much, of which is self-created. We live in constant exertion mode without the following rest. We do not move very much, so the stress-hormones stay in our systems. We push ourselves into unbalanced states of disease and discomfort until we loose sight of ourselves and crash. This has nothing to do with survival, this is self-destruction. Instead of fighting or fleeing the proverbial sable-toothed tiger, we are living with him on our doorstep.
Stress-management is about awareness. About realizing that each of us has the responsibility for ourselves, and the power to control our lives.
In a larger picture it is also about creating balanced workplaces and schools, Individuals can usually handle a big workload if they feel they have some control over what they do and if the situations are positive.
Therefore stress management spans many different areas in society and life. Most of them need to be addressed to create a balanced state of mind that functions at its best.
